Sonia Mathur is a Senior Advocate designated by the High Court of Delhi. With over three decades of experience, she has established a distinguished practice before the Supreme Court of India, various High Courts, Tribunals and specialised forums, advising and appearing in complex constitutional, criminal, economic offences, taxation, regulatory enforcement, extradition and national security matters.
Over the course of her career, she has represented the Union of India, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Enforcement Directorate (ED), National Investigation Agency (NIA), Income Tax Department, Government of NCT of Delhi, State of Rajasthan and several public sector undertakings in matters involving anti-corruption investigations, financial frauds, corporate crime, terrorism, money laundering and public law. Her practice has frequently involved cases of significant public importance with
national and institutional implications.
A significant part of Ms. Mathur's practice has been her long-standing association with the 2G Spectrum cases. In 2011, she was inducted into the Special Prosecution Team assisting Shri Uday Umesh Lalit (later Chief Justice of India), constituted by the Supreme Court for conduct of the trial proceedings. She subsequently continued as Special Prosecutor on behalf of the CBI and the ED in appellate proceedings before the Delhi High Court, appearing in one of India's most closely followed criminal prosecutions involving allegations of corruption and economic offences.
She presently represents the Central Government before the Supreme Court of India. She has also been appointed as Amicus Curiae by the Supreme Court in several important criminal and death sentence matters, including cases where the Court commuted death sentences and set aside convictions after examining procedural and evidentiary issues.
Apart from her litigation practice, Ms. Mathur serves as a Member of the Central Authority of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), the statutory body constituted under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, to formulate legal aid policies and promote access to justice across the country. She has also been invited to lecture at the National Judicial Academy, Bhopal, and other judicial institutions on subjects including economic offences, extradition, criminal procedure and administration of justice.
